A New Chapter at Keyes Lake Campground

Some campground stories start with a new pool, a new cabin, or a major renovation.

This one starts with a goodbye.

Last August, longtime owners Dave and Cindy Laux announced they had sold Keyes Lake Campground after nine seasons of ownership. Effective October 1, 2025, the campground would enter a new chapter under new owners Faith Stevens and Roman Blenski.

What caught my attention wasn't the sale itself.

It was the response.

The announcement generated dozens of comments from campers thanking Dave and Cindy, sharing memories, and wishing them well in retirement. For a campground, that's about as strong a signal as you can get. Campers don't usually take the time to write those messages unless a place meant something to them.

And that's what makes this transition worth watching.

A Campground With Goodwill

One of the things I look for when grading campgrounds is consistency.

Amenities matter.

Cleanliness matters.

But over time, the biggest driver of a campground's reputation is usually much simpler than that. It's whether campers feel cared for when they're there.

Reading through the reactions to the ownership announcement, it was clear Keyes Lake had built that kind of goodwill over the years.

The challenge for any campground after an ownership change is maintaining it.

Not every campground does.

The New Owners Aren't Standing Still

Since taking over, the new owners have made it clear they're investing in the property.

Public reports indicate plans to add additional overnight campsites, expand food offerings, enhance the campground store, and continue building on the campground's ATV and UTV-friendly reputation. Rental equipment and additional amenities are also part of the plan.

That's notable, especially in a first season.

Whether those investments ultimately show up in future reviews is something only time will tell. Campers are usually the final vote on whether changes are working.

But the willingness to reinvest is certainly worth paying attention to.

Where It Stands Today

Keyes Lake Campground currently holds a TrustedCamp Verified grade.

The honest note is that, like many smaller campgrounds, the public review trail isn't as deep as some of Wisconsin's larger destinations. A portion of the reviews also predate the current ownership team.

That doesn't mean anything is wrong.

It simply means we're still early in the story.

The campground already had a solid reputation. Now we'll get to see what happens as a new ownership group begins putting its own stamp on the property.

Why It's On Our Radar

Most campground coverage focuses on where to book.

I'm usually more interested in what's changing.

Ownership transitions matter. New investments matter. The direction a campground is heading matters.

Keyes Lake is a good example of that.

A campground with a strong reputation. Owners retiring after nearly a decade. New owners investing immediately. And a first full season that will likely tell us a lot about where the campground goes from here.

That's worth watching.

And that's exactly why it's on our radar.
