Rig tip: If over 31 feet, call ahead to confirm site length and level; bring ample leveling gear for uneven pads.
Guests describe bathrooms and shower facilities as consistently clean and well-kept, with multiple mentions of spacious and well-maintained sites. Praise extends to the overall cleanliness of common areas and beach amenities. Some minor friction appears with reports of weeds near the beach, and one camper experienced a high severity incident with fallen or dead trees, so caution may be warranted. Overall, reviews suggest cleanliness is a clear strength with only isolated concerns.
Campers report enjoying a well-kept beach, large shower facilities, and spacious recreation areas that generally match expectations. Most amenities described on the website appear to be open and functional. Some visitors mention a desire for more picnic tables, a bigger beach, and are occasionally disappointed by firework restrictions or lack of showers in select sections. Overall, the pattern is positive with only minor inconveniences noted.
Reviews suggest the staff at Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area consistently provide friendly and helpful service. Many guests highlight their positive interactions with campground employees and appreciate the care taken in managing the grounds. There are no noteworthy complaints about staff published in recent feedback, making this a strong signal for most campers.
Most guests receive the sites and accommodations they expect, with few reports of booking errors or surprise changes upon arrival. However, some reviewers mention confusing or evolving fee structures and multiple extra charges during reservation or check-in. While these issues may cause frustration, the overall booking and site accuracy experience is solid, with most campers getting what they reserve.
Reviews show a balanced experience regarding peace and quiet. Some guests praise the campground's relaxing and tranquil atmosphere, indicating a generally peaceful environment. However, RV campers specifically report spikes in noise on weekends due to other campers, suggesting noise levels may vary depending on timing and campground section. The overall pattern is moderately positive with some noise-related caveats for weekend stays.
Many guests find electric service to be reliable, with both 30 and 50 amp options available at most sites. Reviews indicate that the absence of direct water and sewer hookups at individual sites is a common frustration, requiring use of the dump station. Several campers also encounter uneven pads, with leveling challenges noted especially for longer rigs. While basic needs are generally met, the lack of full hookups and varied pad leveling present obstacles for some RVers.
Reviews and ratings across sources suggest a moderately positive reputation, with most guests leaving satisfied. Several strengths such as friendly staff and clean facilities boost community sentiment. However, some documented concerns and inconsistencies with amenities and hookup reliability echo in the overall score. The collective rating points to a good, but not exceptional, camping experience according to recent guests.

The volatility label hides a real split in guest experiences, with amenities emerging as the dividing line. Over the past five years, 35 reviewers at Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area have weighed in on amenities, but their feedback swings from high praise to notable letdowns—with the most recent seven reviews still reflecting that unpredictability. Site quality and maintenance also show a sharp divide: 21 mentions over time, but only five in the most recent year, and those trend more critical than before. Meanwhile, atmosphere and crowd sentiment—once a steady highlight with 20 mentions in the earliest year—has faded from recent discussion, dropping to just two mentions last year. If amenities are central to your stay, read the latest reviews closely to see which side of the split you might land on.

The CampRecord is generated through analysis of public guest reviews spanning multiple years. Patterns described reflect themes observed in reviewer feedback over time and should be considered alongside other research when planning a stay.

Before You Arrive

Gravel or grass surfaces, primarily back-in with some walk-in and group sites. 30 and 50 amp electric available, no full hookups (no water or sewer at sites), dump station and potable water available. Site length varies.

Some are long enough for tow vehicle and rig, others require 'extreme measures' to level. Spacing generally described as spacious, some pads uneven.

Bring a robust leveling system—many sites are not level. No food service in the park.

Closest town is about 4 miles away. Cabins available to rent as an alternative. Office sells ice, wood, worms, soda, and candy. Weekend boat rentals require full-day commitment. Visit the nearby vineyard in Highland. Playgrounds in both sections are basic but well maintained.

A beautiful, well-kept lakefront campground with standout staff and family amenities, but fishing quality and maintenance issues hold it back.
