Rig tip: Many long sites, but some require unhooking; bring extra sewer hose and friction connector for high sewer hookups.
Campers consistently report issues with cleanliness, particularly in the bathrooms and showers, which are described as dirty, outdated, and poorly maintained. Grounds maintenance is also a recurring concern, with guests noting overgrown grass, weeds, and a general lack of upkeep. While some reviewers mention clean facilities when maintained, the overall pattern points to significant lapses in cleaning standards.
Reviews suggest disappointment with the amenities, citing a dirty and poorly maintained pool, an unusable dog park due to gaps in the fence, and limited office/store hours. Guests also mention a need for more trees and shade at sites, and some feel the amenities do not justify the premium price. Although there are positive mentions of a pet park and level pull-through sites, the overall sentiment reflects unmet expectations.
Guests describe the staff as exceptionally friendly and helpful, especially during check-in and throughout their stay. However, some reviews note limited staff presence and restricted office hours, which can make it difficult to address issues promptly. The overall impression is positive, but the lack of staff availability during off-hours is a drawback.

Campers report significant highway and interstate noise, especially for tent campers and those near the road. The proximity to I-90 makes the location convenient but detracts from the peacefulness of the campground. Some guests also mention the presence of long-term residents and a lack of privacy due to closely spaced sites, further impacting the quiet atmosphere.
Reviews highlight several issues with hookups, including water pressure problems at both the sites and in the showers. Some guests mention that sewer hookups are often raised or not threaded, which can make them difficult to use. While level pull-through sites are appreciated, the recurring maintenance and infrastructure concerns lower the overall satisfaction with hookups.
Campers describe a mixed community atmosphere. Some mention the presence of long-term residents in older rigs and express security concerns due to unsavory guests or unmonitored areas. However, there are also positive mentions of a pet-friendly environment and guests returning for the convenient location, suggesting a blend of loyal visitors and transient travelers.

The volatility label hides a real split: cleanliness is the single most documented friction point in recent reviews, but the story isn’t simple. Lantern Resorts - Madison Campground drew 51 cleanliness mentions over five years, with guests in the earlier years consistently praising upkeep—20 reviewers in year one and 11 in year two gave high marks. Yet in the most recent year, only three reviewers mentioned cleanliness, and their feedback flipped negative, a sharp contrast to the near-uniform positivity seen before. Meanwhile, staff and owner interactions remain a quieter strength, with 103 mentions and only two recent reviewers weighing in—both positive. For campers deciding now, the difference in experience could come down to which side of the cleanliness arc you land on, so recent reviews on site upkeep are essential reading before you book.

The CampRecord is generated through analysis of public guest reviews spanning multiple years. Patterns described reflect themes observed in reviewer feedback over time and should be considered alongside other research when planning a stay.

Before You Arrive

All sites are gravel, mostly pull-through with some back-in.

Site length ranges from just adequate to plenty for large rigs, but many reviewers specifically note 'just long enough' for big fifth wheels or motorhomes. Amperage is 30 and 50 amp available. Full hookups (water, sewer, electric) are standard, though several note sewer connections can be raised high above ground and are often not threaded. Sites are described as close together or 'very close' in some loops, but there are also reports of more spacious end and premium sites. Most sites are level.

Multiple reviewers recommend checking out the nearby cheese shop (Ehlenbach's Cheese Chalet) and the many fast food options within walking distance. Use the cheese shop or highway patrol address for GPS if RV Garmin doesn't find the campground.

Google Maps is accurate. Watch for a big speed bump at the entrance. D13 is called out as a great site by a reviewer. Premium sites have patios. The Mustard Museum and Saturday farmer’s market are local highlights. The nearby Kwik Trip station offers diesel and truck lanes. Madison Symphony 'Concerts on the Square' and Vilas Zoo are praised attractions. Bring extra sewer hose for distant or high-site hookups. For big rigs, the drive in and out is easy but expect tight spacing. The Upper Yahara Trail is accessible for walking and biking.

Well-located and friendly, but maintenance, value, and facility issues risk overshadowing strengths for discerning guests.
