Rig tip: Scout assigned site before backing in—steep hills and unlevel pads challenge larger rigs, especially in Sandstone loop.
Campers consistently report issues with cleanliness, particularly concerning the lake and beach areas, which are often described as murky, algae-filled, and unsanitary for swimming or kayaking. Bathrooms in high-traffic areas are frequently mentioned as dirty or having cold showers, and tent campers struggle with muddy, sandy, and rocky ground that is difficult to keep clean. These recurring complaints about both water and facility cleanliness significantly impact the overall score.
Reviews suggest the park offers a good range of amenities, including abundant hiking and biking trails, an amphitheater for music events, and regular family-friendly programming. However, the small and uninviting beach, unsanitary swimming areas, and high kayak/canoe rental prices detract from the experience. Some guests also note that certain amenities, like the lake, do not meet expectations due to cleanliness issues.
Guests describe the staff as helpful and friendly, with positive experiences renting kayaks and canoes and interacting during organized activities. Staff are frequently praised for their welcoming attitude and assistance, contributing to a strong score in this area.
Reviews indicate a generally smooth booking process, but some campers mention challenges with site selection due to terrain or access issues, especially for larger RVs and trailers. There is no widespread mention of problems with reservations, refunds, or communication, but site assignment and suitability concerns are noted.
Campers report that highway noise from the nearby interstate is audible in several campground loops, especially Bluewater Bay and Cliffwood, which detracts from the peaceful atmosphere. While some guests find the park scenic and tranquil, the recurring issue of road noise and occasional disturbances from off-leash dogs impact the quiet score.
Campers note that there are no water or sewer hookups at sites, and some report unreliable power or breaker issues. Access and levelness challenges for RVs and trailers, especially on steep hills, are also mentioned. These factors contribute to a middling score for hookups.
Guests describe a vibrant and friendly community atmosphere, with well-spaced, private campsites and regular family-oriented activities that encourage interaction. Many mention enjoying group events, educational programs, and a welcoming environment that fosters returning visitor loyalty.

Before You Arrive

Site surfaces include dirt, gravel, sand, and grass. All campsites are back-in. Electrical hookups (primarily 30 amp, a few with 50 amp) but no full hookups.

Water fill and a dump station available at entrance except in off-season. Spacing is generally spacious, with many sites long enough for RV and tow/towed vehicle. Sites are mostly shady and wooded, with some levelness issues noted, especially in older loops and on hills.

Watch for added fees (non-resident, reservation, daily pass). Arrive after 3pm—early check-in rarely allowed. Research site numbers: sites on steep hills (like 82E) are hard for big rigs.

Sites in Sandstone Campground may not suit large motorhomes. Bring leveling blocks. Water and dump stations are at park entrance (not available off-season). Highly recommended to visit Ishnala Supper Club (expect a wait, no reservations). Use provided Dells attractions coupon. Wear shoes, not sandals, on trails due to chiggers.

Gorgeous, spacious, well-kept state park with top-tier hiking and camping, but ongoing issues with lake algae, water cleanliness, and some noise/maintenance concerns.
